Payra Port First Terminal Cafeteria
Project Overview
The cafeteria expresses a contemporary tropical modernism that responds sensitively to its coastal-industrial context. The composition is defined by clean horizontal volumes with deep overhangs, creating strong shadow lines that protect against intense sun and heavy monsoon rain—highly appropriate for the climatic conditions of southern Bangladesh. The use of an open wooden pergola structure at the foreground establishes a semi-outdoor transitional space, blurring the boundary between interior and landscape while encouraging natural ventilation and informal gathering. The low-rise massing maintains a human scale within the vast port environment, offering visual relief from the surrounding industrial infrastructure. Carefully integrated soft landscaping and raised planters soften the hardscape and enhance microclimatic comfort. Overall, the design balances functionality for port workers with spatial openness, environmental responsiveness, and a welcoming civic character.
